So I have recently taken to watching the series Hannibal. It revolves around Hannibal Lecter, a cannibalistic serial killer, psychologist, and master chef, and his earlier years preceding Silence of the Lambs.
Who can say what his appeal is? He kills people, butchers them, and eats them, sometimes even with unsuspecting guests. He is a master of manipulation and even strong wills have been bent to his own. He is a wild beast when caged, and his signature mask isn't meant for decoration- he once bit the face off a prison doctor in an attempt to escape his straitjacket.
So why is this human even remotely likeable?
It's complicated.
He is a man of style and distinction. He is not done petty killer; his murder most foul is a work of art. He only kills those who have either commited crimes, or offended him. In a way he is an even more extreme version of Dexter.
I believe that the philosophies behind these types of characters are what makes them interesting, from Jigsaw to Hannibal. They're not insane for the sake of being insane. They don't even think themselves evil. They're simply people with an extraordinary will that have been corrupted- and with that corruption their moral sense has gone.
Tl;dr: Hannibal is a nice guy and a great chef unless you're rude to him. If you are, say goodbye to your liver.
