So out of boredom, challenge, and curiosity, Java/Python newb RenegadeMizu and College-Bound AnimatorArtist urbanknight4 have teamed together to create a game. There are no details yet, but that's what this thread is for! So before we can really do anything, we need to get some ideas, so here's some starting questions: Genre? Platforms? Art Style? What job roles will we have, and who will fill them?
My responses: Genre: I'd like a Turn-Based RPG. Not only is the gameplay relatively simple, but I love them. If we're planning to go serious with this, there's a lack of Turn-Based games on every platform, especially Mobile and PC. Platforms: Depends on how exactly we're making the game. Unity would be nice, but I believe that's aimed towards 3D games, which would make everything else a bit more difficult. Art Style: We could always go the generic "Indie-game SNES look", unless anyone else has a better idea. Job Roles: We need a Programmer(Me, I guess. I have much to learn, but that's half the point of this project!), Pixel/Regular Artist/Animator, and Music person. I think that's the bare minimum.
DISCUSS!

Like Mizu said, we'll be working on a game as well as the other things we have to do. We'll be developing on Unity, and hoping to release on microconsoles and Steam. Tiny problem: we don't have an idea of what to do lol.
Maybe you guys can help us with the creative process?

I have a big game project with a friend, and when I realized the extant of it I suggested to do Troimo (the three words thing). A big project is dangerous for several reasons, mostly if it's one of the first five. May I suggest you : This Vlambeer founder talk who's very nice ! I discovered by walking through Internet that it was very important to make tiny projects first to improve all skills needed (as programming, art, marketing, game design, communication etc) Anyway, it's always exciting to make a project Some advices : - Take time to make GD
- Make as many prototypes as possible
- Motivation, motivation, motivation

sacreyoule has a really good point. Using Unity is probably okay, but we shouldn't be trying to make a full blown game. It's best if we focus on trying to make this a learning experience. The smaller the project the better. How about we just throw some stuff together and just try to make something that "works"?

Exactly my point We still need an idea lol
Btw, if you've played Warioware DIY, I think games like that, or similar, is a good place to start

I'm not sure we should/could use Unity for that, though. We might want to start with a 2D game. Ohhhh, and now I'm getting some good ideas...

Unity is really good for 2d ! Oh, is it? I haven't looked at Unity in a while. Before, it used to be kinda hard to make 2D games but it looks like they fixed that. Unity it is, then!

Hi, I saw your post on /r/gameideas. You mentioned you'd like to make an RPG, I've been working on some ideas for a long time but I have no programming experience and need help actually implementing my ideas. I can do character design and compose the music, but none of it matters if I can't actually do animation or programming.
In my game (still unnamed at this point, working title is Veritas)you choose from one of 22 classes, which are sort of like 'guilds' in that you are with a community of other members of your class. So Pirates start the game in the island kingdom, Gunslingers live out in the desert, etc.
From there, the game is very nonlinear but there is an endgoal and final boss. But between point A and point B it's extremely open ended. You explore this massive world as the class of your choice, and can recruit other party members from the other guilds, or even change your class after going through an 'initiation' process. The gameplay is where I wanted it to stand out. It'd be a bit like Paper Mario, with the ATB system from Final Fantasy thrown in. To land Critical Hits, you have to physically time your combos, rather than rely on luck.
Every class has a bunch of unique abilities. Tamers are basically the equivalent of Pokemon Trainers. As you're out battling monsters, you can 'Tame' them and add them to your party. Witches have Familiars, monsters that assist them and are invincible. Some classes work especially well together; Bombardiers, who use explosives, work well with Engineers, who can construct catapults.
Basically, the game would have most of the gameplay elements of a JRPG but the sandbox feeling of a WRPG.

Hey, welcome to our forum! You might want to post all that info on your own thread, it'll get you more views. As for your skills, all we need are people who can help us and our devs out.
Have fun here, the community is at your disposal

You have a few neat ideas in there. I don't have much experience programming games, so I can't help out much yet. I'm trying to get that fixed as we speak lol. Anyways, hopefully you can find someone who's experienced enough to help. Good luck!
