I have been milling about on a game idea for a while now that for now I've been calling "War Toys".
At the moment I don't have the ability to produce the game nor do I believe that a single person could produce my idea in any sort of time. But I would like some feedback on what I do have, I have the general themes for 3 factions/armies, some units, possible resources and so on. I was inspired by the Command and Conquers I used to play and Starcraft, with the whole toy aspect drawn from a Dreamcast game named "Toy Commander"
Title (working): War Toys!
genre: Real Time Strategy
At the time there is no plot, but the idea is that 3 factions of different type of toys are alive and fighting each other through houses and even through a neighborhood, conquering territory for dominance. The factions use a combonation of human items and their own weapons to do battle. The tone is not terribly serious with plenty of humor in the unit quotes, the weapons they use, and so on.
I do not have proper names for them but I have the idea of what they will be:
1. Plastic Models: Extremely loosely based on the Warhammer 40k models (or plastic war models in general). They focus on expensive but powerful units with a lot of utility through upgrades, aka kitbashing or using collections of almost random plastic parts to create things or modify already existing models.
2. Fantasy toys: Knights, castles and others but instead of "Magic and Dragons" it would be pets or other animals tamed and given armor and weapons or wizards using matches to summon fire and other craziness. The Fantasy Toys would be the faster, more mobile army with slightly cheaper units. They also have the most melee units.
3. Army Men: Inspired by the brave Green/tan/etc troops I had as a kid, they would be the middle of the road army with decent firepower and armor but having varied abilities to turn the tide of battle. If needed they could just be generic modern Millitary Toys. Out of the 3 factions, the Army Men utilize human items the most, like a flame thrower tank being a modified tank hull with a can of aerosol duct taped to its rear to fry the enemy or explode in a blaze of glory!
The game would obviously have the normal base-building and resource gathering mechanics.
So far I have been using the idea that plastic and electricity would be the 2 resources, gathered from varions household things, like Frisbees, batteries, electronic devices, other (non alive) toys and so on. Things like electrical sockets would be unuseable but I figured to just hand wave it as they could be too high voltage for our little troops to safely harvest.
I have been throwing together some potential units that tie into the factions themes. Mind you there would be ALOT more units with there being 3 of each type like a medium tank, per faction with plenty of other units in between for faction flaver and theme.
Footman or Swordsman: Fantasy toys, basic melee infantry: An armored warrior armed with a heavy shield and sword. While he oviously has a range disadvantage against the other factions troops, he can raise his shield to increase his survivability greatly but hindering his movement allowing him to close the gab and get blows in with his blade.
"War Beast": Fantasy Toys, Medium Tank: A Guinea Pig or hamster (or equivalent small pet) tamed by the royal beastmaster and given heavy plate armor and a rotating ballista turret that fires highly sharpened pencils. Crewed by 2 men and "driven" but a 3rd who controls the beast with a long pole with a baby carrot tied to the end (or some kind of treat or food). The "War Beast" can use a Charge attack to trample infantry or ram into enemy armor or structures (can only do this in a straight line) to stun the armor (and the War beast) for a short time. Out of the 3 faction medium tanks it is the fastest but its armor and hits are poor but it fires quickly, if the War Beast gets into close range it can supliment its ballista with additional damage by gnawing on the enemy!
Wolf Tank: Plastic Models, Medium Tank: The basic wolf tank freash out of the Assembly Forge (working name) has armor only as strong as the War Beast and a gun slightly less powerful then the Bruiser Tank (Army Men, medium tank), but after additional kits are aquired at the forge, the Wolf can upgrade itself (for a cost) to increase its armor, gun and speed greatly. Its appearance changes with every upgrade, starting out stark and basic but quickly adding a larger turret, bigger gun(s), extra exaust pipes and plates of plastic armor glued on hapharadly. A Fully upgraded Wolf tank would be powerful but would cost more then 2 of the enemy tanks! Also each tank must be kitbashed (upgraded) seperatly (but can do it at the same time). Fully upgraded it would have the most firepower and armor and be the same speed as the Bruiser Tank.
Bruiser Tank: Army Men Medium Tank: A chunk of plastic on treads seeking glory, the Bruiser tank is the middle man in the medium tank trio. A decent gun, good speed and armor. But when the factory gets upgraded all brusier tanks sport the "Dead Eye" system (its a lase rpointer glued to the top of the tank). The tank can electe to disable its main gun to point the laser pointer at a target, when allied units fire upon the painted target, their RoF and damage is increased. It does not stack though.
Ripsaw Tank: Army Men Heavy Tank: A bulky tank hull mounting a buzzsaw taken from the garage (They won't miss it...), it has a deadly ability to shoot the saw in a straight line at the enemy, hitting everything inbetween before the blade returns back to the tank hitting everything on its return trip. It can also power up its saw when the enemy gets to close, chewing them to pieces.
Epic Units: Kinda iffy, but they follow the idea that they would be powerful, expensive and could be torn apart if not escorted or taken care of.
RC Super Tank (needs name): Plastic Models Epic unit: A giant RC tank, complete with tiny troopers operating the RC controller on top, Its the big slow one of the 3 but you can garrison armored units into it to icnrease its firepower, like adding a Wolf tank would give it an additional cannon.
War Hound: A small dog with a castle mounted on its back with heavy plate armor all over it. You can garrison infantry inside the castle for added firepower (it acts as a transport). It is also armed with 2 catapults chucking heavy flaming marbles. The dog does not "die" but instead when defeated it yelps, shakes off the armor and castle (killing the troops inside) and running off map. It is the fastest of the 3.
Gunship: A C-130 or similar aircraft given VTOL abilities by strapping fans or model airplane engines to it, it carries plenty of firepower on board, being able to drop Tack bombs that can slow armored units or kill infantry or transport 3 armored units.
Super Weapons: So far I cannot tie them to a specific faction, perhaps they can be fought over as objectives on a map?
Cat: The super weapon calls in the dreaded invincible house cat form off map to devestate your foes. You can control the cat (more or less) with a laser pointer that roughly directs the cat as it swats at troops and crushes tanks and structures underfoot. It will eventually get bored (still oblivious and uncaring to the troops trying to attack it), groom itself a little bit then jump off map and out of sight leaving devetation in its wake.
Vacuum Cleaner: Summons a Tornado (emminating from the vacuum), that sucks up enemy units and damages structures with its howling winds.
Fireworks Barrage: Launches model rockets with M80s strapped to them to impact a general areas that you designate.
aircraft:
Fury Bird (if you get the joke, cookie) Fantasy Toys melee aircraft: A small canary with a mounted knight on it, wielding a lance made from a fondue poker. it swoops in on ground units and quickly chases down other aircraft but has little armor of its own, its good for scouting and hit and run.
Balsa Bomber: Army Men, suicide air unit: A $0.49, 1 way attack craft. It is a small balsa wood plane fitted with a small paylod of explosives then directed at the enemy (after winding up the rubber band powered propeller of course). individually it does not do alot of damage and they can be shot down very easily, but enmass they can overwhelm AA defenses and do serious damage.
Special units (those that sit outside of a normal catagory):
Scavenger: Plastic Models, special tank: The Scavenger is a unique tank as it starts out with terrible armor and gun with good speed. But it has a tube of plastic glue mounted on its rear and a small crane that seems to have a hobby knife blade on the end of it. The scavenger runs around the battlefield salvaging parts of vehciles for its own use so it can turn the enemies weapons against them! For example if it salvages a downed War beast ballista, it will quickly mount it to the tank hull and begin firing away. It can further increase its armor and weapons by continuing to salvage parts (until a point of course).
Thats only a little of what I have. Ill keep tinkering with the idea, but I would like some feedback on what I have now, liek suggestions and such.
